About SpeakEasySM

SpeakEasySM is moderated by Martha Perske and Wanda Hamilton, who helped develop this forum to provide an outlet for civil, civilized and literate discussion. Mrs. Perske and Ms. Hamilton will make decisions about the progress and future development of SpeakEasySM.

The forum fosters the belief that our First Amendment right to freedom of speech is one of the most important foundations of this country and supports the Blue Ribbon Campaign on the World Wide Web. SpeakEasySM has been established to provide a free and open outlet for discussion of the many issues smokers and others are concerned about, including:

  • discrimination against smokers in all of the many forms that it takes these days;
  • infringements on the rights of business owners who want to continue to be able to serve their smoking customers without undue government regulation;
  • "science" that is driving public policy and the public policy that is driving "science";
  • loss of personal freedom that current events both reflect and portend, and the host of other issues of interest to smokers.

SpeakEasySM begins with a number of topic areas just to get the discussions started. More can and likely will be added at the discretion of the SpeakEasySM forum moderators.

Whether you provide your e-mail address to others in the forum is entirely up to you. To avoid displaying your e-mail address in your post(s), follow these steps: register as a SpeakEasySM member (including your e-mail address), edit your profile by clicking "Options" on the opening SpeakEasySM page and erase your e-mail address.

So come on in, light up a smoke if you wish, relax and join the discussions in one or more of the topic areas.

Please read the following and indicate you agree or disagree. If you disagree, you will be denied admission to the forum.

SpeakEasy Participant Agreement

  1. I will not use SpeakEasySM, or names garnered from SpeakEasySM, for any commercial or political purpose whatsoever.
  2. I will not attempt to solicit or recruit any participant in SpeakEasySM for any purpose whatsoever.
  3. I will conduct myself in a civil and civilized manner and understand that if I do not, the moderators or administrators may remove, at their sole discretion, any message I post, and may bar me from further access to SpeakEasySM.*
  4. The views I express and the information I provide on SpeakEasySM are my responsibility and my responsibility alone. I agree to hold all parties affiliated with the forum, including but not limited to, the moderators of SpeakEasySM and the administrators harmless for any opinions, assertions of fact or other information I may provide in the SpeakEasySM forum.
  5. I understand that it is not acceptable to post copyrighted material that exceeds fair use in the forum without the express permission of the copyright holder, but you may provide links to copyrighted material available on the web at the originating site.**

    * While we believe firmly in freedom of speech and expects vigorous and perhaps even heated discussion, postings may not include anything libelous or defamatory, anything obscene or pornographic, or anything that violates any law. We cannot review every message posted, and is not responsible for the content of messages other than its own. We further subscribe to the "we will know it when we see it" view of what constitutes a breach of the civilized behavior expected of participants. Spamming and other efforts to intentionally disrupt the forum will not be tolerated.

    ** For example, just because you have found an interesting article from USA Today that has been posted on Joe Smith's web site, that does not confer permission to post the article in the SpeakEasySM forum. That permission must come from USA Today, not Joe Smith. If you want to link to the article, the link should be to USA Today. However, it is permissible, for example, to link to a copyrighted article from another publication that has been posted on a web site where it is clear that the secondary web site has secured permission to reprint the article. We are not responsible for the contents of any web sites which may be linked from SpeakEasySM. (1/8/02)
