WASHINGTON (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union is investigating complaints from more than a dozen black employees at a Six Flags theme park who were told their hairstyles were inappropriate.

"They told me I had to cut them even shorter or go home," DeLeon told The Washington Post. "They said they wanted an all-American thing. That's what they said to all the black people. I had already cut it a lot, so I just left."

The 2006 Six Flags America handbook states that employees are not allowed to have "any hairstyle that detracts or takes away from Six Flags theming."

A year or two ago the Wisconsin ACLU was asked by a newspaper to comment on a recent decision by a city's fire dept. to prohibit the hiring of smokers from employment. They were asked because Wisconsin has a law prohibiting this kind of discrimination. The ACLU said it sounded illegal, but they'd have to check. That's the last I heard of it.

Well, no wonder. The ACLU has more pressing things than city governments breaking state law. Things like haircut rules to investigate.

I would think that the evaluation of a hair style is very subjective. America is suppose to be a melting pot of cultures and I would find it difficult to believe that any hair style could be judged unAmerican. Please review the movie "Hair" for reference.

It depends on the resources of a local ACLU office as to what they are willing to pursue. They need lawyers to prepare the case.

Just like any recognized group in this country, the ACLU is probably non-smoking and won't touch a case involving it. It would probably be the same when trying to find a judge willing to hear the case. Judges are just as brain dead as the rest of the general population, their court rooms have been smoke free for a long time, therefore their are few smoking judges or members of the bar who smoke.

True americans do not smoke. We smokers are worse than an illegal alien. We fall somewhere in the range of the terrorists who flew the airplanes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Bruce, I will agree with you in regard to the ACLU and being anti-smoker....in fact I would go so far as to say they would step up to the plate a sue a company or governemtn that advertised a job openning for "smokers only."

As to there being few smoking judges and lawyers, I beg to differ. Nearly all of the judges and lawyers I know, and that's quite a few after 20 years in politics, are partakers of tobacco!!!!!

I am glad to hear it, but it is not reflected in their actions in behalf of themselves or the rest of us.

The guy's hair was 3 feet long and still 1 foot long after his haircut. Hair style appropriateness is subjective and Six Flags gets to make the decision.

A fire dept. states it will no longer hire smokers which is clearly illegal under state law. The ACLU's response? That doesn't sound legal.

Wow, thanks. We already knew that.

I agree, but our side doesn't pay the big bucks the other side has at it's disposal.
