Tobacco money goes up in smoke

By Kate Andrews The Record Herald

CHAMBERSBURG - Two unnamed Franklin County employees are on administrative leave while officials investigate how more than $150,000 of the county's tobacco settlement money was spent.

"Franklin County government does not tolerate employees who do not follow procurement policies or the county code for purchasing procedures," said G. Warren Elliott, chairman of the county commissioners.

Elliott said the audit will determine if the employees acted accidentally or purposely, but he said it does not appear as though the funds were used for personal purposes.

The audit is being conducted by the county controller's office. Elliott did not know when it will be finished. He declined to identify the employees

Elliott said Controller Carol Fix Diller discovered the discrepancy during a routine invoice review. Diller had not returned phone calls by press time Friday.

About $160,000 of the $200,000 to $300,000 the county receives each year is in question, Elliott said.

If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here.

If they're not outright thieves it's probably just a case of putting people (idiots) in positions they have no business being in.
