Report says thousands of deaths could be prevented with new air quality rules
The report from the David Suzuki Foundation says Canada is well behind the U.S., Australia, and the European Union in protecting its citizens from air pollution. "For sulphur dioxide Canada allows 115 parts per billion, the European Union, 48, Australia, 80." said David Boyd, the report's author. The study estimates the number of preventable premature deaths from air pollution in Canada ranges from 5,900 to 16,000 each year. The report calls for targets for reducing pollution and a national tax on polluters. Boyd hopes the federal government will adopt enforceable national standards for air quality when it introduces new clean air legislation this fall http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/24082006/2/xhealth-report-sa...r-quality-rules.html wow sulphur dioxide Killing more people than smoking a year guess we have to prepare ourselves for the antis read this arical and subsatute smoking in place of sulphur dioxide for getting more smoking bans in place -------------------------- can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen --------------------------- If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here. |

What a boring story. They don't say what diseases these people die from, they just say air pollution.
If that was a story on SHS they'd not only point out which diseases, but exactly how many die from each, how much those deaths cost society, how much it made people's clothes stink, and how many jobs it'll create when it's eliminated. SHS is in a class by itself. If it were a person, it would have paparazzi following it around. It would have a fan club. Restaurants would probably name a sandwich after it. To paraphrase Porsche, "Secondhand smoke. There is no substitute." |

The proplem is everytime a standard is set and met the standard is lowered.
Our major air pollution problem comes from gasification of coal performed by our local gas utility. As city government discussed the new standards the plant was mentioned - that was the extent of it. By combining the entire city proper the averages would still meet the standards. Problem solved. |
