I turned on the weather channel this morning expecting to hear about the snowstorm that is whacking us. Instead, there was something about hotel chains going completely smokefree - including eliminating designated smoking hotel rooms. What the f- does this has to do with the weather? Also, the weather channel is based in Atlanta, thus I assume they are owned by CNN and are required to parrot their anti agenda.

I hadn't heard that one, Nick. Do you remember what chains? If true, the hotel owners are nuts. Smokers are going to be expected to fly without smoking, dine out without smoking, and now stay in an over-priced motel room without smoking? May they all go broke.

I heard that on weather channel too and wondered what that had to do with the weather.

It was a business report. I haven't really noticed these reports before, but you'd think they'd be weather-related. I would anyway.

I wonder if they ever report on what toilet bowl cleaner some chain switched to?

Nick, you were right on the money about CNN. I found the story on their website, under "Travel". The Westin hotel chain is banning smoking, except in a "designated outdoor smoking area". If a guest violates the ban, they will have $200 added to their bill to pay for "cleaning the room". They stated the ban did not extend to the Sheraton chain, which is owned by the same company, or the "Starwood" resort chain.

They claim the Westin "brand" had the fewest smokers, anyway, and they were encouraging guests who seek "personal renewal", whatever that may be.

A spokeswoman for the national hotel association said this was the first major chain to go smokefree and other chains would be watching to see what happened.

Like I said in my earlier post, may they go broke.

Guess it's time to start shopping for a motorhome. Unless someone tells the other chains they will be risking a 25% loss in business.

Wait. That's right. Smokers are becoming so accustomed to being treated like second class citizens, and so unwilling to fight, that we'll soon see them standing outside their motel rooms in a raging blizzard.

There is a poll on it on MSNBC. Its enough to put them out of business. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10338664/

Looks like the stock was down a bit too.

Good! That means 37% dont approve of this sort of thing. Thats more than enough to take care of that hotel chains finances. LOL, exclude 37% of any group of people when ur business is in the service industry and u got problems, big ones. Personally, as long as it is the hotel chains own decision to ban smoking, while i dont like it, it is their right to do so. No government law forced them to make that chocie. Market forces will make them regret that choice.

Thanks for looking into the matter - I didn't have time to watch it and even if I did, it infuriates me to see these reporters gloat over yet another way we're being denormalized. My guess is some hypersensitive anti (not like there are any other kinds) complained enough about a whiff of smoke he detected in a hotel, wrote a letter to the president and threatened legal action. If hotel rooms were well ventilated in the first place, this wouldn't be an issue - unfortunately, every smoking room I've stayed in has smelt like an ashtray that hasn't been emptied for a month and the last one I stayed in was so bad, I actually switched to a non-smoking room, so its not like they can say that smoking rooms required extra maintenance or cleaning? Yeah, I definitely will never stay at or patronize any place that prides itself on being smoke free.

Gabz, we just gained a percentage point and the antis lost one. I voted (actually, there's no "less likely" to it - "absolutely won't" is more accurate). The current tally is 38% against, 62% for. 38% is a very big chunk of business to lose.

As I keep saying, smokers may only be 25% of the population, but we've got spouses and friends that go where we go - or stay away when we do.

Why these neanderthals do not understand that premise is beyond me. In their minds the smokers are going to go along with whatever is told to them........WRONG.

I think Carnival Cruise Lines learned that lesson when they rolled out that completely smokefree ship, touted it all over the media, and people caught with cigarettes were put off at some port to find their own way home.

That policy remained in effect right up until they moved the ship to California, then dropped it because, as one Carnival exec said, "We couldn't fill the ship". Nope, 'cause all those nasty smokers had friends and relatives who stayed home with them, or booked on another cruise line. I suspect the Westin chain will find the same thing happening to them.

Ahem. A few of you may recall that I once started another thread-about a year ago or so? Not sure-wherein I said I was watching the Weather Channel (the only good things about it are looking at Alexandra Steele & Kin Perez)and the people on at the time were raving about the amusement park that was banning smokers from lighting up (outside). I keep telling you all-EVERYONE in the media is against us. The folks at FOX are not our friends, either.

I used to have compassion, but they legislated it and taxed it out of existence.

I remember that Dave. I remember how odd it sounded.

Shepard Smith and John Gibson on Fox seem to find some of the bans ridiculous. And let's not forget John Stossel. Three out of, what, about a million journalists? Hey, it's a start. The rest of them are too lazy to do their own research or too politically correct. Or both.

I haven't heard Fox mention anything about the Westin ban, but I thought I saw something about Chicago voting to enact a ban on the Fox crawler last night. I haven't heard or seen anything more about that, yet.

Squeezer, I think he's personally against smoking, but he thought the Washington ban that restricted outdoor smoking was ridiculous. Some of these people are a bit hard to read...

That brings up something. Why do we so often hear people say they are personally against smoking? The councilman that tried to get our smoking ban rescinded said, "I think smoking's stupid, but..."

I get very tired of hearing people like Dave (thanks Zachary) Smith say, "I don't smoke, smoking's stupid, but these bans go too far."

They might be trying to show their impartiality, but do you ever hear these people say, "I don't own a gun, I think owning guns is stupid, but banning guns goes too far."

Is smoking the only "stupid" thing in this world?

I've noticed that Tucker Carlson on MSNBC is pretty symapthetic to our cause and hostile to the anti-agenda. I have yet to hear him preface anything with "smoking is stupid but..." He's on weeknights at 11 and usually has something on about the latest anti shenanigans.
