Antis continually state that "Smoking causes Preventable Deaths".
Heart Disease is the #1 cause of death in the USA. The CDC data below shows that smoking does not cause more Heart Disease deaths; rather, Non-smoking causes preventable/pre-mature Heart Disease deaths. Gary K. http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/brfss/age.asp?yr=2006&state=US&qkey=4394&grp=0 1997 Percentage of all adults that smoke=23% http://www.cdc.gov/MMWR/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5114a2.htm 1995-1999 April 12, 2002 / 51(14);300-3 SAM = Smoking Attributable Mortality Cardiovascular Disease Deaths All ages Total =940,761 SAM=148,605=16% Smokers=23% of adults and thus die less often from these diseases than do non-smokers. Other Heart Disease Deaths: All ages Total=215,733 SAM=29,368=14% Hypertension Deaths: All ages Total =41,939 SAM =6,060 = 14% Arteriosclerosis Deaths All ages Total = 16,058 SAM = 2,527 = 16% Other Arterial Disease Deaths All ages Total = 10,899 SAM = 1,605 = 15% Or,you could look at things this way: All Ages: The 77% of the population the are N/S have: Cardiovascular disease deaths(CVD) =84% CVD = 940,761 x .77%(n/s) = 724,386 deaths Actual n/s deaths = 940,761 x .84% = 790,239 Non-smoking caused excess deaths = 65,853 Other Heart Disease deaths = 86% Non-smoking caused excess deaths = 19,416 Hypertension deaths = 86% Non-smoking caused excess deaths = 3,775 Arteriosclerosis deaths = 84% Non-smoking caused excess deaths = 1,124 Other Arterial Disease deaths = 85% Non-smoking caused excess deaths = 1,026 TOTAL PREVENTABLE/PRE-MATURE HEART DISEASE DEATHS CAUSED BY NON-SMOKING = 91,194 PER YEAR!! Or, you could look at the data this way. Cardiovascular Disease Deaths All ages Total =940,761 940,761 x 23% = 216,376 SAM=148,605=16% 216,376 - 148,605(SAM) = 67,770 deaths prevented by smoking Other Heart Disease Deaths: All ages Total=215,733 SAM=29,368=14% 215,773 x .23% = 49,628 19,990 deaths prevented by smoking Hypertension Deaths: All ages Total =41,939 SAM =6,060 = 14% 41,939 x 23% = 9,646 3,586 deaths prevented by smoking Arteriosclerosis Deaths All ages Total = 16,058 SAM = 2,527 = 16% 16,058 x 23% = 3,693 1,166 deaths prevented by smoking Other Arterial Disease Deaths All ages Total = 10,899 SAM = 1,605 = 15% 10,899 x 23% = 2,507 902 deaths prevented by smoking Since the CDC would not lie, that gives us: TOTAL = 93,414 pre-mature Heart Disease deaths prevented by smoking!! |

what get me is this
why is SHS more leathal to a non smoker than smoking a ciggy by a smoker and inhaling the smoke directly in your lungs? is there some sort of by product being exhaled from the smoker that is toxic to them <sigh> -------------------------- can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen --------------------------- If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here. |

Funny, we did not see this in the media!!
Gary K. (Antis would make the smokers go outside the sub, even though it was 500-600 feet below the surface http://www.smokersclubinc.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4414 Submarines & Smoking: Who do you believe? Picture a very small, hermetically sealed, totally closed environment. An environment in which hundreds of hard working men needing to be at the peak levels of physical and mental performance all must work closely together for months on end without a single breath of fresh air. Now picture a quarter of those men being regular smokers. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? In today's antismoking world, a single smoker lighting up in a well ventilated restaurant seems to be adequate cause for chills and tremors and faintings and screams among nonsmokers... to say nothing about their imminent and painful deaths. But the sealed environment above is EXACTLY what U.S. and U.K. submariners experience throughout their working lives with nary a chill, tremor, faint, or scream among them, and, amazingly enough, no piles of dead bodies clogging the passageways. How is this done? Is it a miracle? Is God truly on our side and busy at work cleaning the air for democracy deep under the water? Nope. It's all done through simple air-cleaning and filtration, and even without a single hint of a breeze of fresh air, and according to a study presented by the Aerospace Medical Association, it's all perfectly fine: "The findings of this study suggest that the U. S. Navy's submarine atmosphere-control system is performing its designated task adequately during the time frame of the study. Nonsmokers demonstrated urine cotinine levels well below the values indicative of significant passive smoke exposure." Remember: we're talking about an environment that is totally sealed, with a high rate of smoking, in which people are living and working for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for months on end. And yet the antismoking lobby pushing for smoking bans would have us believe that people are in mortal danger from wisps of smoke in restaurants that have their air completely exchanged with fresh outside air roughly 50,000 times a year. Methinks someone is lying. And I don't think it's the Aerospace Medical Association. Read the full article below. Ventilation Even Protects Nonsmokers in Submarines Aviat Space Environ Med. 2004 Jan;75(1):60-4 Jackman RP, Willette PN, White D, Krizek SM. Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory, Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, CT, USA. rjackman8@aol.com OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine which designated smoking area on a submarine, forward or aft, minimizes nonsmokers' exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. METHODS: A survey was administered and urine tested by an enzyme-linked immunoassay for urinary cotinine before and during a 10 d underway. There were four groups tested; submariners on boats with forward or aft designated smoking areas, with each of these groups further divided into submariners whose watch is primarily forward or aft. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in urine cotinine levels between submariners whose watches are primarily in the forward section as compared with those who work primarily aft. This was true for predeployment as compared with deployment levels and whether the designated smoking area was located forward or aft. CONCLUSION: Using cotinine as a marker, passive smoke exposure appears to be minimum. The location of the designated smoking area aboard U. S. Navy submarines does not appear to have any effect on urinary cotinine levels. During submerged operations, the submarine's ventilation system is primarily kept in the recirculation mode, completely isolated from the outside environment. Atmospheric particulates are removed by electro-static precipitators as well as mesh filters and activated charcoal filters ... The findings of this study suggest that the U. S. Navy's submarine atmosphere-control system is performing its designated task adequately during the time frame of the study. Nonsmokers demonstrated urine cotinine levels well below the values indicative of significant passive smoke exposure. Neither the location of the smoking area nor the nonsmoker's work proximity to the smoking area affected passive smoke exposure. This message has been edited. Last edited by: gkayser30, |
