Toledo leads the way
Passage by City Council of a smoking ban in bars, restaurants, and other public places puts Toledo in the vanguard of a public-health movement that is sweeping the country.
And all this time I thought Russ Lemon was saying how far behind the rest of the country they were.
For the first time, a major Ohio city has acted to give nonsmokers - the majority of its residents - a rightful preference over smokers when it comes to clean air and comfort in public accommodations.
A rightful preference? So if 51% of adults smoked it would be the other way around?
Toledoans can be proud of the ordinance, adopted by a resounding 11-0 vote. Now it’s time for other communities in this area to maintain the momentum on behalf of their own citizens.
BS. That is nothing to be proud of.
Instead of attempting to exploit the smoking ban for supposed business gains, the suburbs should be following Toledo’s lead. It would be downright shameful, in fact, if other municipalities and townships in Lucas County do not act immediately. It’s simply the right thing to do.
Speaking of shameful...
As for fear of business losses by restaurants and bars, evidence is mostly anecdotal, and we believe that the hospitality industry will soon find that any business loss will be offset by gains among patrons who appreciate a smoke-free place to eat, drink, and socialize.
Note to Toledo Blade: Several former smokers in my family detest the smell of tobacco smoke nowadays. None of them, however, has ever sought out a smoke-free place to eat nor stayed home. IOW, these massive hordes of new patrons do not exist.
While we would prefer that the ban not allow the construction of separately ventilated smoking rooms, we predict that many restaurants will find that such facilities aren’t needed.
Why wouldn't they prefer an accommodation of smokers?
Smoke-free dining is a plus, not a minus, and it is clear that the tide of history is moving in only one way - toward elimination of smoking in public places entirely.
Private places. You fascist thugs keep saying public. They're private. (Dave I feel extremely sorry for you)
<snip>The rest of this garbage
