99.92%. of the adult smokers will NOT die from lung cancer this year!
http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/washingtonbriefs_2007_fact_sheet.htm "In fact, non-smokers now account for nearly 20 percent of all new lung cancer cases and over 50% of new lung cancer patients are former smokers, many of whom quit decades ago," says the Alliance for Lung Cancer (Alcase), a Vancouver, Wash.-based non-profit group. ............................................ There are about 160,000 deaths from lung cancer per year. Smokers would only account for 30% of the lung cancer deaths or 48,000. Smokers(cigarette/cigar/pipe) are about 27% of the adult population or 61 million adults. 61 million divided by 48,000 = 1,271. Thus, only one smoker per 1,271 will die from lung cancer this year, this is less than 1/10th of 1%. 1,270 will not die, this is 99.92%. Gary K. |

FLASH-TWO
Non-smoking hospitality workers are 80 times as likely to die in their cars driving to and from work as from lung cancer caused by SHS exposure at work! Gary K. Lung Cancer Mortality Rates Age-Specific San Diego County – 2005 Deaths per 100,000 3.3....23.4...78.9...211.7..342.1...281.1 35-44..45-54..55-64..65-74..75-84..85 plus Age category There are 225 million USA adults, 73% or about 164 million are non-smokers. The EPA said that 3,000 of them will die per year due to lung cancer caused by SHS. This means that 163,997,000 non-smokers will not die from SHS caused lung cancer this year. This means that 99.998% of the non-smokers will not die from SHS caused lung cancer this year. About 43,000 people die each year in auto accidents, 73%(non-smokers) would be about 31,400 deaths per year. There are not too many hospitality workers over the age of 65. The EPA said that 3,000 non-smokers will die per year due to lung cancer caused by SHS. About 90% of Lung Cancer Deaths occur over the age of 65. 10% of 3,000 is 300 deaths under the age of 65. About 17% of auto fatalities are over the age of 65 = 7,310, this leaves about 24,100 non-smokers under 65 dying from auto accidents. Non-smoking hospitality workers(mostly under 65 years of age) are 80 times as likely to die in their cars driving to and from work as from lung cancer caused by SHS exposure at work!! |
