The Value of a Human Life: $129,000

In theory, a year of human life is priceless. In reality, it's worth $50,000

That's the international standard most private and government-run health insurance plans worldwide use to determine whether to cover a new medical procedure. More simply, insurance companies calculate that to make a treatment worth its cost, it must guarantee one year of "quality life" for $50,000 or less.

Stanford economists have demonstrated that the average value of a year of quality human life is actually closer to about $129,000. To get to that number, Stefanos Zenios and his colleagues at Stanford Graduate School of Business used kidney dialysis as a benchmark.

If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here.

It makes one wonder whether to dollar amount is the value to the patient or the medical profession? No mention as to what factors were considered in the computation, in fact the case used seemed to be the preservation of life for the sole purpose of performing a more costly proceedure in the future.

This study can't be accurate.

I recently heard through our always honorable media that a stay at home mother should make $134,121 a year in salary.

Please don't debate with this point, because the debate is over. Science has spoken and published in a newspaper. Therefore, Truth has now happened.

Please adjust your expectations accordingly or prepare for fines or imprisonment.
