I just caught some weird crap on FAUX news (Fox)....a woman made a video of her kid, who was 2 or 3 years old, smoking and put it on the internet-whereupon some nazi who knew her ratted, and she is now in jail . Stupid? Of course, but-I couldn't get over the two hens commenting on it-E.D. Hill (who I'd like to bang if I could tape her mouth shut) and some other woman. MY GOD...they went on for all of FIVE MINUTES on this, saying how HORRIBLE and DESPICABLE an act of child abuse this was....and how the woman should go to prison and they should throw away the key-and then, commenting on how many people want kids, but can't have them, and how having children is a sacred trust and a great privilege, etc;etc; etc; ON AND ON AND ON......my God, you'd think she'd had sex with him. This just showed me how much smokers and the ACT of smoking itself are so reviled by the media.

I used to have compassion, but they legislated it and taxed it out of existence.

Glad I don't watch the network propaganda, eh, news anymore.

Keeps the blood pressure down.

That happened in Virginia Beach, VA, which is becoming a hotbed of antis. What the TV newsreaders left out is that the woman was imitating a skit she'd seen on a comedy channel; apparently she was not trying to teach the kid to smoke. While it wasn't the smartest thing to do, what made me angry is that she is being held without bond! O.J. Simpson is out on bond, killers and bank robbers get out on bond, but a woman who puts a cigarette in her kid's mouth is held in jail... They also searched her husband's computer and camera for the "evidence".

I certainly don't condone what she did and it was undoubtedly stupid, but this reaction is beyond the pale. There is surely some lesser punishment to hand out, rather than take her away from her kid if there was no other sign of past "abuse", lock her up and throw away the key. Parents should be terrified that anything they do with their kids could be reason for them to be thrown in jail.

Link to story. The comments seem to be in line with those posted above. It appears that the video is unavailable. It'll probably pop up.

http://hamptonroads.com/2007/12/mother-arrested-over-my...toddler-trying-smoke

I don't know if, legally, they would have any choice but to arrest her to mandate that she receive counseling a fine or visits from child protective services. In other words, if you don't arrest her, you can't really do anything at all, whatever it si, because I don't think its enforcable in any way. Possibly I'm wrong.

The arrest was Monday. They didn't indicate how long it was going to take to process her. It may not be long and they may be trying to figure out how they want to handle the case in the interim.

If they release her, the police can't watch her 24/7 she's likely going straight back home with the kid. If there's a custody matter (and it appears there may be; her husband's ex reported her), or if she thinks she'll be separated from the kid, she might take the kid and split.

If, even by the remotest chance, that kid is somehow hurt or even lightning hits that kid in Mom's presence and the police and/or the judge knew of the situation, the shit hits the fan big time.

The other alternative is to put the kid in government hands, which is really punishing the kid. They say the kid is "with family members"; that could mean an aunt, Dad, Grandma, who knows.

There's not enough information, but I can see what the authorities might be thinking in this case, because it might be a "we have no other choice" scenario. I'd have to see know how long it takes to process her and what the penalty is to give a final opinion. I think it may really be a situation where the authorities either do nothing at all, or, by the nature of the situation, go way over the top.

More than meets the eye here, I'm sure.

Nothing was done here, in light of the stated evidence in the above post, to warrant a jail term, period.

If there was something else, such as a history of REAL abuse or neglect, that would cast an entirely different light on the matter, and would require an investigation into the matter.

There is just something so gestapoesque about this. Neighbor rats out neighbor. Neighbor goes to gulag.

Now, someone tell me what the final outcome of this all will be? This kind of bullshit will only accelerate, you know, the slippery slope all the naysayers claim doesn't exist....

Look at where "we're only asking you not to smoke on flights less than two hours" has led.

She's been released this morning on a $2500 bond that she posted on Monday.

"The girl refers to the woman making the video as "mommy" and is allegedly coaxed into using profanity."

Maybe it's the profanity that did her in.

This didn't warrant jail. This didn't even warrant arrest. There was no endangerment or contributing or whatever they called it. And anybody that thinks a 2 year old kid can light a lighter is an idiot.

The people you really have to worry about are the ones who left comments that the mother deserves to be in jail and should have her kid taken away.

According to this story, it seems you're correct.

http://www.switched.com/2007/12/18/woman-forces-toddler...space-gets-arrested/

But despite it being illegal for anyone under 18 to smoke in Virginia, it wasn't the smoking that did it. Rather, it was Venery's often-profane encouragement of her daughter that landed her behind bars.

When does Will Ferrel get arrested for his video? I saw major news channels pushing his video as being funny.
