Really great essay by Eysenck. I wonder if Nightlight has read it. I think he'd find it particular interesting. The material on smoking (apparently) being correlated with certain diseases, but seemingly not playing a causal role, fits very closely Nightlight's hypothesizing about smoking as therapeutic.
Eysenck, amongst other things, argues that smoking is therapeutic for things like stress or psychosocial conditions, while Nightlight emphasizes the upregulating of glutathiamine, amongst other things, as the important factors. I think Eysenck's statistical evidence that smoking is not causal (even if it is correlated) makes Nightlight's theories about smoking as therapy even more persuasive. For not only are they grounded in science cited by Nightlight, but also are consistent with the statistics cited by Eysenck. |
