At Least 18 Anti-Smoking Groups Claim that Secondhand Smoke Causes Heart Damage as Severe as that of Active Smoking
A current example of one of these inaccurate claims is the statement shown below, which is extracted from a strategy guide produced by the American Cancer Society, entitled "Building Public Awareness About Passive Smoking Hazards." "Health messages illustrating the immediate effects of second hand smoke." Immediate effects of second hand smoke include cardiovascular problems such as damage to cell walls in the circulatory system, thickening of the blood and arteries, and arteriosclerosis(hardening of the arteries) or heart disease, increasing the chance of heart attack or stroke. Have you ever wondered just how much SHS nonsmokers are exposed to? Let's put a smoker and a nonsmoker at a bar about 1 meter(3feet) apart. Let's put the smoker, a cigarette, and an ashtray in a airtight cube 2 meters(6 feet) on a side. The nonsmoker will have his nose sticking through the side of this cube so that he only can breathe air from the cube. We will say that the smoker will take precisely 5 minutes to smoke the cigarette. The Calif-EPA says that a sitting person breathes about 7.5 liters of air per minute. (California Environmental Protection Agency) http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/resnotes/notes/94-11.htm Thus, the nonsmoker will breathe 37.5 liters of air from the cube while the cigarette is burning. Our cube holds 8,000 liters of air. The nonsmoker breathes 37.5 liters or .005% or 1/2 of 1% of the air and no more than 1/2 of 1% of the SHS in the air. The smoker, breathing both mainstream and side stream smoke, will breathe about 27% of the total smoke from the cigarette. At three feet the non smoker is exposed to 1/54th the amount of smoke as a smoker. At six feet the non smoker will be exposed to 1/432nd the amount of smoke as a smoker. One would expect smokers to immediately drop dead from heart attack or stroke after smoking a cigarette. Since we do not 'drop dead', one can only conclude that smokers are physically much, much superior to non-smokers!!!! Gary K. |

Love it! I'm going to try to save these math equations, because I'm trying to find something out for a valid argument. Each morning, I drive by a plant that produces computer parts. I would guess that every 5 minutes, the smoke emitted from their chimney exceeds what every single smoker in my city of 62,000 could put into the air in a lifetime. But before I present such an argument, I want to be sure I know what I'm talking about.......

Here is a bit more for you.
EPA and other anti smoking groups say that 3,000 nonsmoker adults die from lung cancer caused by exposure to SHS. There are 177,750,000 nonsmoking adults in the USA. That is a risk of .00017% or 2/10 of 1000th of a percent. Do you really believe it is possible to remove all risk in this world?? There are about 45,000 auto accident deaths per year. There are about 300,000,000 people in the USA. That gives a risk of .00015% for dying in a auto related death. Using antis risk aversion beliefs, we 'MUST' ban cars,on public property, for everyone's safety!!! Since we are banning smoking in bars and restaurants due to the health hazard to the workers(most notably lung cancer) and their risk for dying in an auto accident is about the same as their risk for getting lung cancer caused by SHS: .00015% to .00017% We 'MUST' ban cars on public property for the safety of food and drink servers. This will also be 'FOR THE CHILDREN'!!!! As with smokers; we will give car owners a break, they can drive on their own property, just not on public roads. Gary K. |

Second hand auto deaths and injuries.
http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/pr/news/story.c... Nearly 5,900 pedestrians are killed by automobiles every year and 84,000 suffer nonfatal injuries, according to the National Safety Council. A disproportionate number of these pedestrian victims are kids under age 15, who experience one-third of the tragedies but constitute only 15 percent of the U.S. population. This means that about 1,950 kids are killed and another 27,700 are injured from second hand exposure to cars every year!!! No one is calling for the banning of cars on public streets,'FOR THE KIDS'. Yet,the anti-smokers state "there is no safe level of exposure to SHS". Are the anti-smokers blind? (OK,it's a dumb question!) Gary K. |
