This is a group exercise. Participation's not required, but if you have a number please add it.
The goal is to find more deaths per year (in the US) than are actually claimed by government sources. I forget who publishes annual deaths (broken down into categories), but I know the last time I saw the number it was ~ 2.4 million. So the object is to come up with a higher number than 2.4 million (or whatever it currently is-must look it up). For example, one number we're all familiar with is 400-440,000 deaths from tobacco annually. 440k usually is with SHS deaths included. So what you would do is find someone reporting that number, quote the appropriate paragraph(s) and post the link if available. Or if it's stored on your computer, quote the pertinent part and any interesting parts and where it came from. Not all numbers will likely be of use for the final tally like the following example: "An estimated 1.3 million Americans die of cancer, heart disease, and other heavily meat-related causes each year." --Dr. Neal D. Barnard, in a September press release from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, urging a federal lawsuit against "Big Meat" The problem here is that PCRM doesn't say meat is solely responsible, they just say heavily meat-related. That's more of a fun "fact", but if you know a number like this you can post it anyway. There's no time limit on this. If a year from now you run across a claim that something is killing people, track down this thread and post it. I'll start with (excess) salt: Health Group Urges Less Salt in Food The Associated Press, Wed 13 Nov 2002 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The nation's largest public health group is recommending a 50 percent decrease in salt in processed food and restaurant meals over the next 10 years. The American Public Health Association said the reduction could save 150,000 lives a year from strokes, heart attacks and other illnesses linked to high blood pressure. A resolution passed Tuesday at the health association's annual meeting in Philadelphia... ``Americans are consuming an ever-increasing amount of processed foods high in sodium at home, at work, at school and in restaurants,'' said Dr. Stephen Havas, the lead author of the new policy. ``The excess sodium in these foods is unnecessary and leads to a large, preventable toll of hypertension, premature death and disability.'' ``Appealing to individuals as well as to industry to take simple but effective steps to limit sodium in our diets will yield measurable results in lowering Americans' risk for cardiovascular diseases and related conditions,'' said Dr. Claude Lenfant, director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you can find an even larger number post it. As an aside, How many epidemiology studies ask about sodium intake? Smokers are said to lose some sense of taste and smell. You could surmise that smokers probably use more salt than nonsmokers. If true, some tobacco-related deaths are actually salt-related deaths. LOL |

And when you finish and you have found out that there are more deaths each year atributed to things than the population of the USA it won't make any difference to the fact, if you smoke you are more likely to die a long painful early death and be in poorer health for more years before you die if you smoke cigarettes than if you don't. If you quit smoking you are on the road to reducing the amount of harm tobacco does to you.
Also if you are a smoker it is more likely your children will be smokers than if you were not. There fore indirectly you are increasing the chances of your chidren also having a long slow painful early death. Tobacco is addictive, you all say you want less outside interference in your lives but none of you seem to be able to see that tobacco controls you each hour of your waking life. Smoking is a persuit of the lower classes, you are more likely to smoke the lower your income or social status. Smoking makes you look poorer to people around you. Why not just put your spring water bottle in a brown paper bag, that would make you look poorer. I could go on but already I hear you spouting the old faithful "the anti is parroting anti propaganda again." And squeezer, you have that association back to front, because smokers lose some taste sensation they are likely to use more salt. Fast food outlets and other places food is prepared cater for a cross section of the community and therefore are likely to add more salt to allow smokers to taste the food. The higher amount of salt in the food is because there are smokers in the community. Following this association we can say some of the deaths and health problems atributed to salt are also associated with tobacco even in non-smokers. |

I think you can use this as a reference point. Funny, smoking is not mentioned. But,they do use death certificates after all! |

OOPS!!!! Leading causes of death and numbers of deaths, according to age: United States, 1980 and 2001 [Data are based on death certificates] SOURCES: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics, National Vital Statistics System; Vital statistics of the United States, vol II, mortality, part A, 1980. Yes gkayser30, we'll go with NVSR numbers.
The most current I can find is: Mortality experience in 2003 + In 2003, a total of 2,448,288 deaths occurred in the United States. link Trends in numbers and rates The preliminary number of deaths in the United States for 2004 was 2,398,343, representing a decrease of 49,945 from the 2003 total. link So we'll use 2.4 million. |

[QUOTE] if you smoke you are more likely to die a long painful early death and be in poorer health for more years before you die if you smoke cigarettes than if you don't.
What, no links to prove your claim. How stupid. Smoking is a persuit of the lower classes, you are more likely to smoke the lower your income or social status. Smoking makes you look poorer to people around you. Why not just put your spring water bottle in a brown paper bag, that would make you look poorer. My my, you are an elitest little pig, aren't you! So politically incorrect. Fast food outlets and other places food is prepared cater for a cross section of the community and therefore are likely to add more salt to allow smokers to taste the food. The higher amount of salt in the food is because there are smokers in the community. QUOTE] Riiight; and the Romans paid their soldiers in salt because they all smoked and not for any other reason. And again, no proof to back-up your rantings. You still have not stated what percentage of cancers are caused by benzene(or anything else) as compared to smoking. |

I like your game! Healcare deaths= 1,000,000 ://www.mercola.com/2004/jul/7/healthcare_death.htm Smoking 440,000 deaths: CDC,ALA,ACS,and etc. Not much wiggle room for everything else. Since you are from Wis;I regret saying this,but I am not sorry. GO BEARS |

Not sure if this is the kind of info to use, but I'll try to play the game. Tell me if this isn't right.
Deaths caused by benzene have been attributed to asphyxiation, respiratory arrest, and CNS (central nervous system) depression. Autopsies have also shown lung hemorrhages, cerebral edema, and congestion. Cancer cases have been associated with people exposed to benzene for less than five years to more than thirty years. Benzene has been linked to multiple leukemia cases, usually acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), but also chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphohcytic leukemia (CLL), and Hairy-Cell Leukemia (HCL). It has also been associated with multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, myelodyplastic syndrome, myelodysplasia, and secondary aplastic anemia. These diseases are a result of the chronic damage done to the body’s bone marrow. More than 300,000 people per year are exposed to the chemical through their workplace, and over 10,000 deaths per year are attributed to benzene exposure in the United States alone. People working with petroleum products are exposed to significant amounts of benzene. The following jobs fall under the high risk category. · Painters · Adhesive Production Workers · Chemical Workers · Dock Workers · Paper and Pulp Production Workers · Pipe Fitters · Barge Workers · Offshore Workers · Refinery Workers · Gas Station Attendants · Pesticide Manufacturers · Industrial Plant Workers (using solvents) · Rubber Workers · Shoe/Leather Workers · Truck Drivers Benzene Deaths ladyteal |

The number I find to be most useful in putting these other numbers into perspective is:
43,000 Americans each year are killed in car accidents (NTSB) I'm being a bit lazy. Google the phrase above. It's easily verifiable. It's interesting to note that not even this number is completely accurate (though I'm sure it's very close), because it often can not be determined whether someone had a stroke or heart attack while driving. Also, I've read that 10 or so Americans die each year from a vending machine falling on them. If your Butterfinger doesn't drop, sometimes it's just meant to be. ____________________________________________________ Hope. Change.... Is "American Idol" on? |

Damn! I thought I'd give others a chance and then you go and take mine! LOL I believe that number originates from here. Just to expand on it a bit: Bedsores Over 1 million people develop bedsores in US hospitals every year...bedsores carry a fourfold increase in the rate of death...a death rate due to bedsores of 115,000. http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2006/aug2006_report_death_06.htm Malnutrition in Nursing Homes A report from the Coalition for Nursing Home Reform states...results in 108,800 premature deaths due to malnutrition in nursing homes. The whole list: Adverse Drug Reactions 106,000 Medical error 98,000 Bedsores 115,000 Infection 88,000 Malnutrition 108,800 Outpatients 199,000 Unnecessary Procedures 37,136 Surgery-Related 32,000 Total 783,936 "Using Dr. Lucian L. Leape’s 1997 medical and drug error rate...produces an annual death rate of 420,000 for drug errors and medical errors combined. Using this number instead...would add another 216,000 deaths, for a total of 999,936 deaths annually, as shown in Table 2." New Total 999,936
Never say never. I've seen 100,000 deaths alone from SHS. I just can't find it at the moment. Bears ar OK. LOL ladyteal, the benzene 10,000 deaths is fine. But now you have to find ALL deaths from workplace exposures. |

In 1996 my father died of this leukemia, he was a heavy equipment mechanic and work around machinery , solvents, grease, oil, fuels, even in the army, ww2 as a mechanic .. Even tho he a smoker smoking never bothered him... the leukemia didn't kill him it was the common cold that turned into pheumonia....on the death cert cause of death acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) -------------------------- can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen --------------------------- If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here. |

Causes and Risk Factors In most cases the cause of AML is not known. Several factors have been associated with an increased risk of the disease. These include exposure to Very high doses of irradiation, as carefully studied in the Japanese survivors of atomic bomb detonations The chemical benzene, usually in the work place Chemotherapy used to treat cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer or the lymphomas. The chemothearapy drug classes known as alkylating agents and topoisosomerase inhibitors are most frequently associated with an risk of AML Therapeutic radiation, depending on the dose and duration of treatment Tobacco smoke. http://www.leukemia-lymphoma.org/all_page?item_id=8459 Which type of benzine it it causes cancer or leukemia? Lots of environmental factors and genetic factors are involved.
|
||||
|
All those chemicals;but,not much of any of them.
The FDA limit for arsenic in a "safe" 8oz chicken breast is about 120,000 nanograms of arsenic. There is about 32 naograms of arsenic in all the smoke from the average cigarette. The allowable amount of arsenic in that "safe" chicken breast is equal to the arsenic in all of the smoke from 3,750 cigarettes. The local ACS people say that waiters and waitresses are exposed to the amount of ETS equal to smoking 16 cigarettes per shift. They would have to work for about 47 weeks to be exposed to the amount arsenic allowed in that "safe" chicken breast. |
||||
|
The FDA allowable arsenic level in bottled drinking water(17oz) is equal to the amount of arsenic in all of the smoke from 8 packs of cigarettes. However; there is no safe level of exposure to cigarette smoke. |

For these anti's, truth really isnt important. Im about to get rid of a computer customer of mine for their anti efforts. She is perhaps the biggest hypocrite ive ever met and im gonna tell u y... This person never used to have a problem with second hand smoke. It never used to effect her. Now, everytime shes around it, she gets sick. Oddly, whenever ive been in her home working on her or her family members computers, i can barely tolerate smoking a cigarette either. My upper chest feels sore and tight for about 3 days. There is a very good reason for this mind u. Know what it is? Well, she has 4 cats that have been pissing in her house for years and the stench of the amonia in it as well as the other stuff in it is overwhelming. I mean this has gone on for many many years. U cant even clean it out no matter what u try. Now, how can someone gripe about second hand smoke when what they breathe on a daily basis is what is causing her troubles and she cant see it? It is also far more harmful to u. Buildings can be torn down for that sort of stuff. And yes she has kids and theyve had to put up with it for years as well. But, nope, its the smokers. (rolls eyes)

Note to everyone:
Please try to stay on-topic. What we are looking for here is not a discussion on what deaths are the most painful, but what things are claimed to be responsible for deaths. The bigger the better. gkayser30 threw out this one: "Smoking 440,000 deaths: CDC,ALA,ACS,and etc." But I can beat that with: "It also shows the importance of research on the best way to tell young people about the dangers of smoking, Banzhaf says. "Here we have a product that costs $138 billion a year in health care and kills up to 500,000 people a year, yet we don't know enough about how effective different warnings are," he says." link And verified (LOL) by Glantz: From Dennis Prager interview, transcribed by speakeasy member Andrew "Glantz Well, smoking kills about 500,000 people" link Okay, so far we have: Salt-150,000 Benzene-10,000 Car accidents-43,000 Adverse Drug Reactions, Medical error, Bedsores, Infection, Malnutrition, Outpatients, Unnecessary Procedures,Surgery-Related-999,936 Smoking-500,000 Total so far: 1,702,936 Gee, if we were to use my meat example we'd be at 3 million already. LOL There's still alcohol, obesity, lack of exercise, sun-related deaths (someone claims 60,000 die a year from lack of sunlight) and then there's skin cancer deaths to add to that. I think after the top 15 causes of death there's 400,000 deaths after that. We have a ways to go people. LOL |

http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/statistics/index.htm#12
Deaths Among People with Diabetes, United States, 2002 * Diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death listed on U.S. death certificates in 2002. This ranking is based on the 73,249 death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. According to death certificate reports, diabetes contributed to a total of 224,092 deaths. * Diabetes is likely to be underreported as a cause of death. Studies have found that only about 35 to 40 percent of decedents with diabetes have diabetes listed anywhere on the death certificate and only about 10 to15 percent had it listed as the underlying cause of death. |

And what about a very efficent delivery system, suck, lung, blood? And when you have other environmental exposure how does the chemicals in tobacco help? You see you are exposed to all the other sources of arsenic plus tobacco! |
