Given that an estimated 80 percent of people are nonsmokers, a smoking ban could actually mean increased business for some bars, Smith said, a fact borne out in some studies where bans have been implemented.

However, a statewide ban must be enacted soon to protect "the little mom and pop" taverns most at risk in communities where bans are adopted, Smith said. He and Kreitlow worry that smaller, neighborhood bars in Eau Claire could lose patrons to those in neighboring communities that allow smoking.

"That's the downside of communities enacting their own bans," Kreitlow said.
----------------------------------------------

Yet another asshole proponent of the (I refuse to say the words again) LPF. Thinking by some strange process that if someone in a bar or retaurant in another part of the state has to stop smoking, it will help theirs by some miracle. It Will not and cannot. The business owners then do the nazis work for them, and their locally-owned business closes eventually anyway. Non-smokers will go out no more frequently than they did before, smokers will hardly go out at all, and the rabid smoker-haters never went out in the first place.

I used to have compassion, but they legislated it and taxed it out of existence.

I was going to mention Pat was also from here, but I didn't want to embarrass him too.

A friend of mine stopped in at his usual after work bar today and called me to tell me what he saw.

The bartender told him she normally can't smoke during during happy hour because it's just too busy, even though she could smoke behind the bar before the ban. Today she had time to step outside 6 times.

My friend got there after happy hour and counting him there were 3 customers. He said normally there would be 15 at that time. The bartender said she might make $25 today in tips. Normally it's $150.

A co-worker of mine, who lives on Water Street in this town, has been threatened twice already by people who apparently love the ban. He was walking down the sidewalks in front of businesses while smoking. Have to be 25 feet away now, you know.....the secondhand smoke could inadvertently drift into the buildings if you're any closer. Roll Eyes

Yet I'm confident that the media; especially the Leader-Telegram, will soon twist this and say that businesses are thriving.

Pat,
When did they come up with that 25 foot rule? I know the courthouse has that and I've broken it every %$#@# time I've been there since, but I didn't know businesses got stuck with that law too.

Our city council is full of $%#@#$% dumbshit sheep and the health dept was/is? run by a Nazi.

One funny thing concerning our city council. A few years back one of councilwomen went for a ride with a cop at night to see for herself all the public urinating going on in town. It's a college town and IIRC the urinating had a lot to do with college students hitting the bars and the underaged crowd going to house parties.

She described seeing a "herd" of girls outside one house urinating. She also said the cop parked in an alley to investigate someone else urinating. While he was gone, the councilwoman said a drunk walked up to the police car and urinated on the passenger side front tire.

ROFLMAO

Piss on all of them.

The bar mentioned at the beginning of the story is in my town. I've been in it a few times in my life.

The city that's the center of the story is about 5-10 minutes north of our city limits. They only recently allowed the sale of beer in convenience stores (gas stations). I was astounded when I heard that. I thought all Wisconsin gas stations had beer. I've even been in one that had wine and liquor. LOL
