Still awaiting the news conference, but Fox News has just announced the NY Times reported that NY Governor Elliot Spitzer has been involved with a prostitution ring.
While waiting for the conference, I'll be adding Spitzer's view on tobacco below:

quote:
"In an effort to continue to make New York state the healthiest state in the nation, we have determined that the sale of tobacco products is not appropriate on the New York State Fairgrounds and we want to encourage people to participate in a healthy lifestyle," fair Executive Director Dan O'Hara said Wednesday.

Tobacco products will no longer be sold at any event at the fairgrounds, not just during the fair, he said. Gov. Eliot Spitzer is pushing to make New York the healthiest state, O'Hara said.

"The reason it's good is it's part of the broader process at work in society," said Russell Sciandra of the Albany-based Center for a Tobacco Free New York. "We are seeing the promotion and sale of tobacco sort of being denormalized.”

quote:
Gov. Eliot Spitzer today called for a state ban on flavored cigarettes that allegedly target youth smokers.

The move came six months after New York and 39 other states reached a settlement with R.J. Reynolds, where the tobacco giant voluntarily agreed to stop selling flavored cigarettes carrying names like “Twista Lime” and “Mocha Taboo.”

Speaking at a meeting of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, Spitzer decried the fact that 700,000 children take up smoking each year and 220,000 will die prematurely.

“This is a crisis,” the freshman governor said in Manhattan this morning. “We must take aggressive action to reduce these numbers.”
The cigarette ban was part of Spitzer’s so-called “children’s agenda,” which also includes restricting the sale of violent video games and movies to minors, and serving nutritious food in schools.

quote:
Oct 24,2005

ALBANY, N.Y. - The world's largest shipping carrier, UPS Inc., will stop delivering cigarettes to individuals in the United States under an agreement announced Monday with state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.

The agreement is the latest in federal and state efforts to combat the sale of under-taxed cigarette and to fight underage smoking. Most under-taxed or untaxed cigarettes are sold by Indian tribes, where the taxation of sales to non-Indians is disputed.

Monday's agreement leaves only the U.S. Postal Service among major carriers to continue to deliver cigarettes to individuals, Spitzer said. He called that practice "an embarrassment." Spitzer continues to negotiate with Federal Express, but they are thought to handle a small amount of the trade, said Spitzer spokesman Marc Violette.

quote:
Sante Fe Natural Tobacco Co., Inc. v. Eliot Spitzer
00 Civ. 7274 (LAP)(S.D.N.Y. June , 2001)
Court holds that Section 1399-11 of New York's Public Health Law runs afoul of the Commerce Clause of the United States Constitution, and accordingly permanently enjoins its enforcement. Section 1399-11 prohibits the shipments of cigarettes to consumers in New York. The statute's prohibitions apply to both retailers and common carriers, and effectively preclude the use of the Internet and mail order catalogues as a means of selling cigarettes to New Yorkers. "The statute … thus restrict[s] retail sales of cigarettes in New York to face-to-face transactions at in state retail locations." The Court held that the statute was unconstitutional because it violated the "dormant" aspects of the Commerce Clause, which prohibit States from passing legislation which discriminates against, or unduly burdens, interstate commerce.

quote:
CAMEL AD STOOPS TO NEW LOW
A new advertising campaign for Camel cigarettes, the second-most smoked cigarette brand among teens, has raised the ire of three state Attorneys General.

As part of the campaign, R.J. Reynolds mails an envelope to individuals on their birthday which reads: "Camel - It's your Birthday. Drinks on us." Inside the envelope are six different drink coasters, each with a recipe for mixed drinks with high alcohol content and tag lines that promote excessive and irresponsible drinking such as, "LAYER IT ON. GO 'TIL DAYBREAK," "MIX THREE SHOTS TOGETHER OVER ICE, THEN MAKE SURE YOU'RE SITTIN'," and "POUR OVER ICE, THEN LET IT BURN." One recipe calls for 5 shots of rum and a can of frozen lemonade, blended and poured in one tall glass. "Kiss Your Worries Goodbye."

In a letter to R.J. Reynolds, New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, and California Attorney General Bill Lockyer demand an immediate end to the campaign.

"This promotion is a complete abomination," said Attorney General Spitzer. "Virtually every parent in America knows what it is like to anxiously wait for a child to come home from a night out with friends, worrying that someone will be drinking and driving. Now R.J. Reynolds - apparently not satisfied just selling its own deadly products - is encouraging individuals to 'celebrate' their birthdays by abusing alcohol. It is just shameful."

"Binge drinking is a major public health issue nationwide, especially on college campuses, which makes this campaign even more appalling," said J. Edward Hill, President of the American Medical Association. "Research shows the adverse health impacts of smoking and alcohol are increased when these two addictive products are used together." (NAATPN)

No he didn't. I suppose he doesn't want to give ammo to whoever it is that PROSECUTES HIM for his vice. ROFLMAO

Question: Would you rather find out that your spouse was secretly smoking cigarettes behind your back or spending up to $5,000 an hour on prostitutes...not to mention just the cheating aspect or the risk of transmitting a disease or the time you could've spent together DOING IT with each other!?

%$#@#$% moral crusaders.

If I could afford $5,000 hookers I wouldn't be denying it. I'd be bragging about it.

Let's enjoy this little moment and put it in perspective for what it really is.

It's very difficult for us normal folks to even comprehend the mindset that is at work here. Spitzer has successfully prosecuted against prostitution rings as Attorney General. Al Gore has a "carbon footprint" the size of the moon. Bill Clinton has interns perform acts of, eh-hem, extreme friendship on him in The Oval Office and then lies to the country about it.

The syndrome isn't limited to politicians. I saw a photo of Julia Roberts recently where she parked in the handicapped spot without a thought in the world. Angelina Jolie last week decided that she needed to do a write-up and put it in The New York Times. George Clooney would be glad to tell you how to live your life. Sheryl Crowe rides around lecturing people about Global Warming and Lance Armstrong thinks that he's Mr. Smoking Ban.

After Spitzer's announcement to the press today, I understand that reporters shouted to him "Are you going to resign?" Spitzer, I've heard, slammed the offstage door behind him in response.

Spitzer was immediately put under fire in New York State for wanting to give illegal immigrants driver's licenses. He had 70% disapproval on the proposal. He held onto it for weeks before giving a rather snotty speech where he finally let it go, but not without reminding everyone first how right he is and how wrong they are. It's rumored that Hillary Clinton and The Democratic National Committee had to finally step in to make him change his tune.

I can't read minds, but I bet Eliot Spitzer thinks there's a victim in this scandal and he feels sorry for that victim. That victim, of course, in Spiter's mind, is Eliot Spitzer.

It's probably obvious to many of us here now from the policies these people endorse and/or put in place, but they believe that it is their world and we just live in it.

The scary thing is that I don't know if I can really blame them! People fall at their feet, they make assinine sums of money and they hold tremendous power. People are likely to turn the other way when they break the rules, and, after awhile, they come to believe that the rules apply to the little people, but not to them. (Remember; the CEO of Scotts fires employees who smoke off the job, but he confessed that he smokes cigars himself--the rules aren't for him.) The people at large fall for it hook, line and sinker.

Power, wealth and fame are very corruptive and it has an awesome impact on the mind.

Eliot Spitzer won the New York election for Governor with 75% of the vote. He went into office with the best of intentions, grabbed hold of the controls and immediately headed fullspeed into a crash and burn nosedive.

It kind of makes sense. He had nowhere to go but down.

He reminds me of another Democrat in the news. He's likely to become President.

People are waiting for Spitzer to resign. My crystal ball isn't working too well these days, but don't hold your breath. Spitzer is a pitbull and he's not going to let go without tearing away some flesh. I could be wrong at any second, and probably larger powers will intervene, but I think if Spitzer has his way, he'll drag the state and his party through the mud before he'll ever believe he's done something worth his resignation. Really. I think he's that far gone. We'll see.

Spitzer isn't thinking of resigning. He gave the same speech Jesse Jackson did when he got caught with his pants off; It was something like, "I have to take some time off for the good of my family." But Jackson was back in front of the cameras doing his meaningless rhymes within a week. That's what's in Spitzer's mind right now. In fact, I'll bet he just looked at his watch and tapped on the crystal to see if it was stopped. Gonna be a long week for him.

The last sentence of his speech basically says he'll stay at the job. He's just too important to worry about what The People (and his family) really think of him. He needs to be there to lead them.

Ah, yes Elliot Spitzer - the master mind behind the Master Settlement Agreement! If I remember correctly, he's the one who initiated the MSA.

I heard one report/comment, that Spitzer would most likely resign because if he stays on as Governor, the IRS investigation would continue. If he resigns, they will most likely not pursue the investigation. It sort of makes sense to me - but I really don't know. Remember this whole thing started as an IRS investigation into possible corruption concerning payoffs or illegal campaign contributions. Furthermore - I also heard one report that he's in violation of the Mann Act - which had to do with transporting prostitutes across state lines.

Like Winston mentioned, Spitzer didn't have a great approval rating. I've heard that even people in his own party were not terribly thrilled with him. One thing I'd be VERY CURIOUS to see, how this will affect Mrs. Clinton's campaign - I mean she IS the Senator form NY!

Thanks,

Many of us have noticed that more often than not, former smokers are the worst anti-smokers. Last night one of the news channels had a psychologist or psychiatrist on to explain Spitzer's actions.

Religious and political leaders who had been caught up in scandals were brought up. She said (in my own words) that they are compensating for their real thoughts. That is, the religious leader who rants on about homosexuals and then is caught doing homosexual things, was ranting about homosexuals to convince himself that he's not homosexual because if he was he wouldn't be condemning them (and himself).

For anti-smokers who are former smokers, this means they still want to smoke but are deluding themselves that they don't, or as Winston brought up with Scotts CEO, he does smoke, but squares it with himself by being an anti-smoker. He can't possibly be a smoker because he won't hire them.

Anyway, they go after what they fear they are, to prove to themselves that they're not. That's one explanation for these people.

Oh, I just remembered one of her examples; the congressman who was the big champion of protecting House pages, and then got caught bopping one or two of them.

She also said something about these people wanting to get caught. This could explain the outrageous studies and statements the anti-smokers make.

Next time you hear an anti-smoker say smoking next to a kid is child abuse or attempted murder or oral rape, try to envision what kind of hell their children might be going through at home.

Btw, who's up for placing bets on Spitzer's home life? I say his wife won't let him touch her for 90 days and only after he's twice tested for STDs.

Bet 2: I say Spitzer hires a hooker in 18 days, starting yesterday.

I thought she could use some work on her hair. It's looked better. LOL

Jemeyes,
She might divorce him down the road, but I don't think she would've stood next to him if she had it in mind at that moment.

I wish these women would quit standing next to their husbands. They look stupid. "Yes, I'm the wife of this whoremonger. This is the guy who totally humiliated me. I thought I'd add to the humiliation by standing next to him because he thought it would help him politically. Him. Not me."

After hearing that Spitzer may have spent $80,000 on hookers in the last 10 years I figured if he had spent money like that on cigarettes his whole life he'd probably be dead from lung cancer already. Smokin'

Also heard that after he made his announcement to the world, he holed up with advisors, including his wife, trying to figure out how to save his career.

I guess she's a whore too.
