I love being a parent. I am right in the middle of it! ages 12,10 and 8. Its time to start imparting important life lessons so that they can grow up to be honorable, hardworking, thinking adults with common sense and integrity.
the problem is...how to teach this and explain at the same time the stupid stupid world around them!!!
The school teaches my kids that smoking is "taking drugs" and you know what i mean when i say that I know nicotine is technically a drug,(but so is aspirin) but they are throwing smoking in with cocaine and heroine!
I am going to teach my kids not to smoke like i do for better health, but I also need to impart that smoking is not the detriment to health that their teachers have told them.
I want to teach them to respect the police, representatives, senators, president. But how can I when I know in my heart I should be teaching them to look for nazi tactics from an untrustworthy source trying to trample our constitutional rights?
How do I teach honesty when just this morning some woman is suing general mills, because she wasn't aware that fruity pebbles weren't healthy for you??!! Hello? whatever happened to common sense? Is it seriously as lacking as it seems? How can we live harmoniously in one country when it is split right down the middle with almost opposite views on everything in life!
I have to worry on a daily basis that a teacher or other authority figure is trying to teach my child liberal, judgmental, propoganda! Instead of about their rights as an american citizen and how important it is to hold these rights dear!
How do I teach my child that fighting as a soldier in a war to allow another country to have our same freedoms is heroic, when we in this country are allowing our elected officials to twist, bend, and abuse our laws for their own financial gain?
I now believe the most important thing I can teach them is this..."no matter what someone else is doing, if it isn't dangerous(seriously) to you or anyone else, butt the hell out!"

I walked a mile with pleasure,
she chattered all the way,
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.

I walked a mile with Sorrow
And ne'er a word said she;
But oh, the things I learned from her
When sorrow walked with me!

Good to have you on the boards, Annelizly. I like your message (quoted above).

Now, do you seriously think that both first and secondhand smoke is not dangerous? Why have 7 countries and a growing number of US states banned it altogether if it is so harmless?

Very good question! And I think you should send your post to every politician and news reporter you can think of. I hate to say it, but wait till they go to college...the propaganda is just as bad there, if not worse....the crazy people in this world don't want them to forget what they were taught before they became adults...

This post was in reply to annelizly...NOT NicoNazi....

It's not really about teaching them what to think or not about different issue's, it's far more important to insist they "think". People can think logically, but, it doesn't come naturally, it's something that has to be practised. Folk's that are very rational, have little difficulty seeing the bigger picture. You don't have to worry about them.

I honestly don't believe that second hand smoke is at harmful as we are led to believe. I will believe it when first, an unbiased scientific study is done, and second, you tell me why all the baby boomers aren't dead! Most if not all of them were exposed to serious amounts of shs and by anti's criteria they should all be wobbling around with lung cancer at 20!
I was exposed to shs my whole childhood and was NEVER sick. neither were my sibling or friends who were also exposed daily. My kids are sick(cold/flu) once a year at most. All the other kids i see who live in non smoking homes are constantly ill with asthma or bronchitis or anemia, etc... I do not see in "real" life the proof that shs is as harmful as we are "led" to believe.
do you believe it is harmful only based on the propoganda? Do you have real life instances that prove to you it is terrible?

I don't think its dangerous, honestly. and don't you think its "funny" that all of a sudden, at the SAME TIME 7 countries and all our states have decided to ban smoking? why? I believe that for the first time smokers have become the overwhelming minority ,the anti's have become overzealous in their hatred of smoking and its politically smart to pander to the majority and get reelected.(even at the expense of minorities rights) and I think it is Financially a great bunch of people to rape for budget money.
If you think our government actually wants to see everyone quit smoking your mistaken. They would S**T themselves if everyone quit! Where would they get their billions of dollars for their budget balancing then?

A good post Annelizly; you ask good questions. Welcome aboard. A person who responded to you . . . well, "responded" is perhaps too generous . . . after yours someone posted the following: "Why have 7 countries and a growing number of US states banned it altogether."

Uh . . . "banned it altogether"? What? There is no state in the US nor is there any country that has banned smoking altogether. Not recently anyhow. It's true that smoking is prohibited in certain venues in various places, but that's not news. There has been no smoking (or spitting) in New York City subway stations for longer than I've been alive, for instance, and I've never heard of smoking during a symphony concert. More recently there have been some smoking restrictions in some types of bars, restaurants, and other places, but altogether banned? I don't think so.

Welcome Annelizly,
Schools certainly have become laboratories for social engineering... this started when I was in elementary school in the 70s -early 80s and from what I can tell its only getting worse. A co-worker of mine got called to her 8 yr old daughter's school the other day for an "emergency" which happened to be that her daughter told another kid that she will "kill him" if she or he didn't give her back her pen or toy or something. This is why public education in the US has become a pathetic joke. I wouldn't worry about your kids though, despite the anti-crap they teach them in school, you set the best example by teaching them common sense.

Why don't you read up on the history of tobacco and see if you can come up with the answer to your own question. It's been banned before in many states and countries, and not just smoking it in "public" places, but even the growing, manufacture, and sale from time to time. Anti-smoking efforts in the late 1800's were especially pronounced.
