Japanese automakers settle with asthma patients

TOKYO (AFP) - Asthma patients Friday welcomed a settlement with major Japanese automakers and the government resolving a long row over air pollution blamed for killing more than 100 people in Tokyo alone.

The plaintiffs agreed to a court-mediated settlement to end an 11-year legal battle against seven automakers, which include industry giants Toyota, Honda and Nissan, and government bodies.

More than 520 Tokyo residents had filed the lawsuit, blaming diesel gas fumes for causing their asthma. The plaintiffs said about 110 people who were previously part of the lawsuit have already died of their illnesses.

If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here.

Just as it's BS that shs "causes" asthma, so it is with car exhaust, too. Asthma is a condition that some people are predisposed to. While shs or car exhaust can aggravate the symptoms, the fact remains that the asthma was aready present. These car companies are being sued wrongfully. It's as simple as that........

Of interest investigate the instance of new asthma cases among those living in FEMA trailers after the hurricanes.

As more and more building products and furnishings are manufactured with pressed wood products made with formaldehyde the incidence of asthma has increased. FEMA trailers are full of fumes months after originally occupied.

In Japan, I can only assume, that furnishings are also manufactured using products formed using formaldehyde.

Remember that new house smell, or new carpet smell?

Although asthma cases are flourishing amongst the FEMA trailer occupants, the government is still investigating the problem.
