I just received a letter today from the Michigan Dept. of Treasury saying that I owe them $*,***.** due to the internet purchases of cigarettes over the past 3 years from Dirtcheapcigs.com in Kentucky.

If anyone has any info or links that can help me fight this I would appreciate it.

I don't have any links for help, but when this happened not long ago in Wisconsin there was such a stink over it the governor called it off. People who had already paid didn't get a refund, but everyone else who had already been notified didn't have to so maybe don't be in a hurry to pay up in case that happens there.

The state cannot lawfully issue refund checks to some 53 smokers who paid back taxes they owed on cigarettes purchased online, the attorney general said in an opinion Friday.

Gov. Jim Doyle had ordered the refunds after learning the Department of Revenue sent letters this summer to about 1,000 people telling them they owed back taxes because they did not pay them initially when buying cigarettes bought online.

According to the Department of Revenue, some 200 people had sent in checks totaling $82,000 to pay the back taxes. Fifty-three checks worth $23,400 were cashed while the rest were sent back after the governor issued his order to stop.

Doyle spokeswoman Melanie Fonder said the governor was just trying to do what he thought was right.

"It's unfortunate that the attorney general and treasurer have said they don't want a very small group of people to get this refund," Fonder said.
