French Tobacco Shops Close To Protest Cigarette Tax

"PARIS -- French tobacco sellers are protesting their government's aggressive antismoking campaign by closing their shops.

An estimated 90 percent of France's vendors refused to sell cigarettes Monday after a second tax increase on smokes went into effect. They called it a "day of mourning" for what they called a dying trade.

The closings made for a desperate day for some smokers. One man who frantically searched for an open shop lamented that he couldn't even buy a cigarette at the higher prices."

Probably won't rememdy the tax increase, but I feel they made a small point.
