This line from the article cracked me up...

quote:
Ohio officials estimate the state missed receiving nearly $500 million in the last fiscal year and local governments lost out on $100 million.

They "missed receiving", "they lost" - excuse me the money was never theirs to begin with. It never ceases to amaze me that these officials somehow think money earned by citizens belongs to the state.

There is a simple sollution to Ohio's problem regarding purchases made a cross state lines - LOWER THE SALES TAX. If the Ohio sales tax is lower than that in michigan less people from Ohio would cross the state line and probably folks from Michigan would cross into Ohio, thus increasing revenues.

It's human nature to look for the best deals - it's part of the reason that the outlet and mall parking lots in Delaware are always filled with out of state license plates - NO SALES TAX.

I long ago realized it is reasoning like this that keeps many people from being elected to office.

Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my cigarettes.

I'm 46. I remember when my state had a 3% sales tax. Then it went to a "temporary" 4%. It is now 5% and many counties have since added their own .5% tax.

Now why is it that with inflation there is no reason to raise a sales tax, revenue will stay the same. And with people's salaries generally going up faster than inflation excess revenue is raised.

Then you throw in (as in my state) the state pols reducing revenue sharing to local municipalities and the state budget should be in fine shape. So why isn't it?

I save about $13 per carton by driving 30 minutes to reach the Delaware line. Everyone West of here drives to Virginia and saves even more. But when it comes to taxes, MD doesn't just pick on smokers. A couple of years ago the State had the gall to propose a new tax on any factory-direct furniture that was purchased in N. Carolina and driven back home by Marylanders. Apparently, the measure never passed as I haven't yet noticed any furniture dragnets out on the highway pulling over those naughty couch-laden pickup trucks.

And while you're costing MD tax revenue on cigarette purchases in Delaware, the folks in Delaware are making it up in alcohol revenue by driving over the line to eat and drink in Maryland where they can enjoy a cigarette with their libations!!!!
