"City of Norfolk Selling Discounted Cigarettes

"It was advertised in the classifieds. Cartons of cigarettes, only $10 each. Cash only, six cartons maximum, proof of age required.

A great deal for smokers who can pay close to $30 a carton....but was it a sale at a local convenience store? No, the cigarettes were for sale at the Norfolk Commissioner of the Revenue office.

The cigarettes were confiscated during a Norfolk police bust. They were not repurchased by the manufacturer, so the city of Norfolk started selling them and putting the money in the public coffers.

So far, the city has made more than six thousand dollars.

But some are asking if the city should be selling a product known to cause cancer.

"Cigarettes can kill you," says Lowan McCoy, who was buying the discounted cigarettes Friday. "I guess Norfolk doesn't care about its people."

Friday was the last day to buy these cigarettes. The cartons that remain will be destroyed.

Following WAVY News 10's look into the cigarette sales, 10 On Your Side is told the commissioner is rethinking whether selling cigarettes sends the right message and may discontinue the entire program - even though it is completely legal for the city to sell the cigarettes."
