"Vice President Al Gore's new economic plan includes a tax increase of 25 cents per pack on cigarettes..."

Bush, on the other hand, "has said the federal tax on cigarettes should not be increased, because such levies 'tax the poor.'"

Gore plan includes cigarette tax, Courier-Journal, 9-9-00

Let's not beat around the BUSH!!!

While this article is specifically about investments in tobacco stocks, some of it bodes just as well for smokers.

Tobacco Stock, Bush share rising tide

Go Bush, GO!!!!!

It has been a long time since a Presidential race was so close that each individual votes counts so very much. It is important that we all vote on Tuesday and urge everyone you know to do the same. It is especially important for our friends on the West Coast to not pay attention to the east coast talking heads who will start making predictions before your polls close. This is especially true if Gore starts taking a lead the media will not so subtly try and tell you that the race is over. I realize noone here is that gullible, but there are many out there who are, and we all know at least one person like that.

I can not stress this enough - nor can I stress the need for volunteers to help out at the polls. Contact your local representative and offer to assist in any way you can. In my area, because our public transportation system is so poor the need of volunteer drivers is always crucial. But there are lots of other ways you can help out - even if it for only an hour.

Ashcroft has been a good senator, one who has NOT jumped on the persecute-the-smokers bandwagon and who has a fine reputation as a capable and honorable man.

Thompson has the antis all upset, so he's probably okay, though I know little about him. Glantz et al are having conniption fits about him in particular.

Whitman has NOT been a friend to smokers.

You're right about Whitman - big tax increases in New Jersey. Although the fallout on that was good for smokers in Delaware. Cigarette sales soared here after the increas in jersey and so we didn't get with an increase!!!!!
