As I've mentioned before, I live in a small town, population of about 3,000. Everybody knows just everybody and when the town officals are elected we TRUST them to have everyone's best interst in hand, since they are your neighbors. As a result the board meetings very seldom have anyone as spectators unless it's a complaint about the neighbors, say, dogs barking all night.
Boy, were we wrong. They have made our town into a construction dump. Of course this deal was made behind closed doors and only a select few knew of it until it made our local paper. They say the meetings to be held with the DEC, the landowner and company he partnered with are to voice our concerns, but we all know it's already a done deal. Our town signed a deal for 70 - 75 semi trucks a DAY to dump construction materials at $1.00 a ton. This company will cover a 200 mile radius and will be here for 15 years leaving behind a 300 foot mountain. These trucks will be coming down our back roads, passing our grade school and going down one of the few tree lined back streets. This company will be redoing the roads, cutting down the trees and blah, blah, blah. Over 200 people showed up at the first meeting, which had to be moved outside since the room isn't big enough to hold that many. The big talk from the town fathers was 1) we lost over $90,000 in education funding this year. 2) the county is broke, taxes are about to skyrocket and this will help keep taxes roughly the same, but for how long, they won't commit to. 3) the town is broke since we've had 3 small factories and 2 businesses move due to Niagara Mohawk's outrageous electic prices and having to deal with NY period. And they say the ban isn't hurting. We figure the sales tax loss from just our small town is close to $50,000 a year. Our Legion cut their college scholarship in half and can no longer sponsor any youth sports teams or provide uniforms, the rest of us are hanging by a shoe string. Still, our Senator says it's the economy and (I scream) 9-11 yet has no response when asked "Why then is PA hospitality trade up over 27 million." Anyways, three houses have already gone on the market along the route these trucks will take and more are to follow. They all say there out of NY and that's that. Soon I won't have to worry about the ban since no one will be left in town. |

What the he!! is wrong with these people???? I'd like to know why nothing anyone says makes any difference to the "powers" that be! Are we all running around with a cloaking device enabled and don't know it and that's why they can't see or hear us???? "Beam me up Scotty" cuz the longer I'm on this earth, the less I understand....just can't stand all the bs anymore....

quote: $1 a ton? The landfill my city owned and then sold to a private company charges $47.25 per ton. It wasn't always that high, but they raised it to try to keep out-of-state garbage (Minnesota) from coming here. Interstate commerce laws, or something like that, prevents stopping them from coming here. But geez, only a dollar a ton? You'll be lucky if you don't have 12,000 trucks coming every day. |

$1.00 per ton is the "introductory price" soon they will be asking for a price increase because they are losing money. $1.00 per ton is a joke. If you read their contract it will contain a big out. i.e. "we will keep this price until no longer viable" (the city people will then be taken out to big dinners, at no cost to them......."
