Dave I checked out the hotel guide and found nothing for British Columbia. I visit Vancouver every year and the the hotel I stay at is, of course, not listed. Would like to see it put up there. How?

Thanks, Roy! As someone who travels quite a bit, it does get challenging at times to find hotels that welcome smokers. I can help you with hotels in my state.

This needs to be a commercial site, if it is not already. You need to encourage hotels to enter their information. I can understand where users could input information but that will be no help for the occational traveler looking for a room.

The same would be beneficial for places to eat while traveling. Have you had any contact with the hotel and restaurant association about this site?

In the long run it would be nice to know exact addresses and links to the venues' web page.

Links to maping software would also be nice.

I am looking for a hotel in the DC area. I go to a US government conference in Arlington every summer and the conference hotel does not allow smoking. Last year, I looked all over the web, finally reserved a room very far away, and when I got there, it turned out the whole chain had banned smoking; it was a small notice on the website. This year, I have two conferences at the same time -- the Arlington one and one in DC at the Omni, where I will probably have to stay, or nearby. Can't tell if the latter has "smoking rooms" (I always clarify -- I don't want a room that smokes; just one that is tolerant).

I suggest you rent a motorhome. There was a story during the 500 Mile Race here about the cost of gas. Many RVs are used during this race. One man had an RV delivered to the site for the duration of his stay, the dealer then picked it up after the race was over.

Check with the hotel about parking it somewhere close to the events you want to attend, also make a point to notify whoever is organizing the event as to your problem.

In most cases the organizers are getting free lodging, suites, food, and meeting rooms based on the number of paying rooms they attract. No paying rooms means NO event in many cases.

Thanks for the RV suggestion. It might work in other situations. I am afraid it won't work in downtown DC. No chance that the conference organizers will be the least bit sympathetic; they support the ban, and I am sure the hotel knows that they would not use a hotel that allows smoking -- especially the federal government conference. All federal grants and contracts specify that all workplaces receiving funds have to be smoke free.
Anyone know of a DC area hotel that allows smoking? The only obvious one is too grungy even for me -- SRO, broken window shades kind of place.

I suggest you ask the local convention and visitors bureau. Most conventions attract RVs, especially by exhibitors. Besides the number of tourists who drive them.
