List Of Smoke-free Apartments Offered

Database Is Catering To Those Who Want To Pursue This Increasingly Popular Rental Choice.

Renters can get help finding smoke-free apartments through a list compiled by the Apartment Association of South Central Wisconsin. The list notes 1,277 units in all...the group also is working with insurance companies to offer premium discounts to property owners for insuring smoke-free units.

"That's a good incentive," said...executive director of the association. "Then there's three more good reasons,"...They include liability and risk, maintenance and the apparent demand, since a majority of people don't smoke, she said. The association created the database by sending out 2,000 questionnaires to landlords; 320 responses were received. Last year, the group sent out 750 surveys and got back 150 responses, listing a total of 731 smoke-free units. The primary reasons were safety and cleanliness, she said.

"I got tired of picking up cigarette butts," she said. "The maintenance of the buildings is far more costly when you have smokers."...she is currently evicting someone partly because of smoking. Evert, advertises her units as being smoke free. "Quality tenants don't smoke," she said.

Bigot. But you're entitled to your views.

What I would like to comment on is how few landlords even care. They had a 16 and a 20 percent response to their mailings: Not very good if smoking is such a big deal.

Also, why is this association so concerned about smoking; it must be headed by an anti. I can see the database being useful, but grasping at straws at reasons to go nonsmoking smacks of agenda.

I'm 46 years old and have never been asked by my insurance agent(s) if I smoked in my house. If there is a premium reduction for being smoke-free I'll bet it isn't very big.

MONEY MONEY MONEY

Working with insurance companies?????

They might as well be working with shyster lawyers, there is very little difference.

Dollars to donuts they are getting deep discounts (read - kickbacks) from the insurance companies to go smoke-free.

As it is, it is extremely difficult for those that need to rent an apartment to do so because of the cost of rent.............and now they are looking to keep even more people from being able to rent an apartment?????

Granted I own my home, but relatively speaking it was not that long ago that I was paying rent. There have been articles all this week in the largest papers in various areas about how difficult it is to rent a place based upon the median rent and the median wage.

Someone making minimum wage ($6.15 an hour in Delaware) is basically unable to rent an apartment anywhere.
