CARLISLE College wants to build a `smoking platform' for students and staff.

The platform would be at mezzanine level, between the ground and first floors, with an open front and canopy cover. It would hold around six to eight smokers at a time and, although visible from the street, would only be accessible from inside.

The proposal has angered the nearby Cumbria Deaf Association (CDA), particularly secretary Ruth Wilkinson who said: “I find it offensive because I am a cancer sufferer.”

CDA chief executive John Brown said a number of his staff had reason to be sensitive about smoking.

He said: “We are seeking clarification with a view to putting in an objection to the plan.”

“We do not have enough information at this stage but we feel that there is a smoking gun and it may be pointed at us.”

Architect Charles Bancsi...defended the decision to include a smoking area saying: “Carlisle College is a non-smoking building internally so we have made concessions to people who still smoke.

“Even if the college didn’t provide a designated area there would be nothing to stop anyone going out of the building and smoking in the surrounding streets.”

“The smoking platform is subterranean with a canopy...therefore we are unsure of the detail of the concerns.”

story

I'll give the details: They're either loons or a$$*****, especially Ruth the cancer suffering secretary.

BTW, The Cumbria Deaf Association has offices in several cities. The picture of the one they have on their website has a sidewalk as the only buffer between it and pollution-spewing vehicles. I wonder what Ruth has to say about that?

How much do you want to bet that Ruth is on the antis' payroll - or getting some reward from them for her bitching and moaning.

Well, lets say Ruth was a survivor of malignant melanoma - then she should be duly outraged at the site of subathers in a public park or beach. This being England though - I guess that doesn't happen too often so she has to settle for taking it out on the smokers.

tobacco control = publicly financed mental illness.

Exactly.

And alcoholics should be offended by the sight of taverns and liquor stores.

People with diabetes should be offended by Dairy Queen, McDonald's, and Twinkies.

"tobacco control = publicly financed mental illness."

Damn, good one Nick. Big Grin

That tobacco control = publicly financed mental illness? I'd say that's a big issue here.
