Scholarships for kids who pass drug tests?
February 26, 2008 BOISE – BOISE – Idaho teens soon may have another test to worry about if they want state help paying for college. A urine test. The Idaho House voted 55-14 today in favor of HB 503, a pilot project to give scholarships to kids who agree to stay drug, alcohol and tobacco-free – and prove it through random drug testing. http://www.spokesmanreview.com/breaking/story.asp?ID=13843 What will those Anti's dream up next?? -------------------------- can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen --------------------------- If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. A UK-based group (forcing a Judicial Review of the English smoking ban) is Freedom to Choose, with another great forum for chatting and organizing here. |

I can smell this one a mile away.
The Headline will read: "Idaho Mom's Smoking keeps Son from Gaining Scholarship" ____________________________________________________ Hope. Change.... Is "American Idol" on? |

Since the link didn't offer an opportunity for comments (on my computer at least). I sent an email to the editor of the Spokesman Review telling him/her that this was a wrong-headed act.

This seems stupid when most public high schools are lucky to graduate 70% of their freshman classes.
By the time these students reach college this money might buy a single text book. |

If this scholarship program was privately funded I wouldn't really have a problem with it. It's incentive-based, rather than exclusionary, but when government does something like this it just smacks of one more well-intended step forward for the Nanny State.

Utah banning malt bevs for sale in grocery stores.. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/nation/20080304-1616...-xgr-liquorlaws.html A Senate panel wants flavored malt beverages like Mike's Hard Lemonade to be sold only in state liquor stores. The backers of Senate Bill 211 say the drinks are targeted at teenagers. However, opponents note that the Federal Trade Commission has twice found that's not the case. If the bill becomes law, Utah would be the only state in the country to ban flavored malt beverages from grocery and convenience stores. Senate Bill 211 now moves to the full Senate for a vote there. http://www.slweekly.com/index.cfm?do=article.details&id...3A2-9F4B34000D1BDE12 -------------------------- can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen --------------------------- If you're fed-up with government intrusion into our private lives (alcohol, tobacco, weight or so-called obesity, etc.) especially the nonsense and destruction surrounding smoking bans, then discuss/fight smoking bans at the FORCES tavern or go directly to their FORCES homepage. And what, they're not targeted if they buy it from a liquor store instead? This law can't be anything more than a crusade against alcohol...period. Just like smoking, anything and everything they can think of, they try to pass. What difference does it make where they get it from or if they get beer or whiskey instead? Btw, I'm not real up on brewing and distilling. What makes Mike's Hard Lemonade a malt beverage? I believe it's just vodka and lemonade. Where does the malt come in? |

|
Mike's Hard Lemonade label says: "Flavored Beer" "5% Alc/Vol" "Premium Malt Beverage with Natural Flavors"
No vodka! Besides, it's harder than heck to buy alcohol in Utah anyhow! (been there, tried that) |

Many things are more difficult in Utah and the state's smoker rate is the lowest in the country at about 10%.
http://www.statehealthfacts.org/comparemaptable.jsp?ind=80&cat=2 When you look at '% of Adults Reporting Poor Mental Health'. You find that Utah at 41.4% has the most in the country. http://www.statehealthfacts.org/comparemaptable.jsp?ind=93&cat=2 Gary K. |

Gary K. I was wondering;
Can you put this on a graph of some kind? Highest incidence of mental health issues, lowest smoking prevelance to Lowest mental health incidence and Highest prevelence? On the surface, I would think these things would intersect and form a near perfect X on such a graph. Who's in the middle of such a chart? Which state would appear to have the perfect balance of smoking and insanity? |

Beer? Who ever heard of putting beer in lemonade? My God, are we growing a nation of pansies? Thanks smallbird. |

LOL squeezer! Mike's is actually pretty good and you sure don't get "drunk" on it!
Plus there's other flavors besides lemonade, i.e. cranberry, berry & lime... Good after golfing! |
