I put on Weather Channel last night around midnight and caught a report on the fires affecting Florida I think. I didn't catch where they were talking about and haven't kept up on the news lately.
They had asked a doctor as to the seriousness of the smoke. He said the particulates could be dangerous. They may make your eyes water or give you a scratchy throat. Something along those lines. He also said it could be harmful to people with asthma and to smokers (because their lungs are impaired. He said NOTHING about nonsmokers dropping dead from heart attacks after 30 minutes exposure or anything like that. Irritation (eyes and throat) was the sum total. People should really start wondering why there's no mentioned health hazards associated with wood and brush smoke, but tobacco smoke is said to kill almost on contact. |

I'm sure they would have wood / brushfire smoke on the "instant killer list" immediately, if they could add a 3 to 4 dollar tax on it somehow, or find a way to get an MSA out of it.
Sue "BIG NATURE" NOW!!!! ---------------------- BAN THE BANNERS!!! |

The primary difference is if they extended the same argument to smoke from nature the economy of the effected area would collapse. No one would leave home to buy anything, do anything, consume or produce anything.
Smoking Bans work because smokers continue to leave home, buying and producing. If smokers withheld their labor on days the May 31's no smoking day. Everyone is complaining about the cost of gasoline as they continue to drive to the grocery store every day. How many drivers have considered the cost of transport to/from work compared to their net earnings that day? |
