You may have heard about the much touted study a few months ago that claimed that male circumcision protects against HIV infection in Africa. Out of 10-20,000 males in the study, there was something like 40 cases of HIV in the uncirc'd ones vs. 25 in the circ'd cohort - a small number either way, but public health is all about playing with numbers to grab headlines as we know too well here. There was no mention of how the US, where most males have been rotuinely circ'd at birth until recently has a higher rate of HIV infection than in Europe where male circumcision is very rare. Anyway, NYC's health department now wants to ban foreskin along with trans fats and smoking. Considering how this would boost the sales of medical devices antibiotics and painkillers, I'm willing to bet that RWJF is behind this.

If this was smoking: The public would be invited to spew hatred at these "community groups and gay rights organization". Instead of asking to "provide the procedure at no cost for men without insurance" we'd hear the cry for taxing them instead. We'd hear what a burden these people are on society. If this was treated the same as smoking, they wouldn't be talking about snipping off the foreskin. They'd be talking about chopping off the whole damn thing. |

I would think the study probably represents the same ratio of men who have experienced the proceedure to those who have not in the general population.
It would be interesting to see how the city of New York inspects for the situation. |

Actually, Most boys born in California nowadays are uncut...The progressive types have been very successful there in convincing parents that circumcision is child abuse. Considering these are the same people who like to equate smoking around kids as child abuse, it would be kind of ironic for them to find themselves in the public health gestapo's crosshairs if they don't get little Johnny cut. |
